Earth day is April 22nd! In honor of Earth Day, I wanted to share with you a favorite story about a man who builds a desert oasis in the American Southwest. Alejandro lives in an adobe house in the desert with just a burro for company. To pass the lonely hours he plants a vegetable garden. He waters his carrots, brown onions, tomatoes, corn, and peppers with water from a well. One day a squirrel drops by for a drink and his loneliness vanishes for a brief moment. So he decides to draw as many wild visitors as he can by building a watering hole where animals can drink and seek shelter. This gentle story about a relationship with man and nature follows his progress by trial and error, and is accompanied by Sylvia Long’s intricate illustrations featuring desert plants and wildlife. Includes a fact-filled glossary at the back!  Ages 5-8
