February is Black History Month, and to pay tribute we wanted to feature one of our favorite stories, My Uncle Martin's Big Heart, by Angela Farris Watkins and illustrated by Eric Velasquez. Last Wednesday, we featured Barak Obama: Son of Promise, Child of Hope by Nikki Grimes, jump to that review here.
We're all familiar with Martin Luther King, Jr. and his role as a civil rights leader and American hero, but this unique book shows the personal, everyday side of this larger than life figure. Written by King's niece, readers are introduced to someone who loved his family, worked hard to make a better future for his children, and loved to laugh. Historical events are interspersed with family stories, and a warm, jovial person, just like your favorite uncle shines through. Excellent way to introduce Martin Luther King, Jr. to young children 5+
Have a lovely day!
