A poetically told memoir by Maria Tallchief (1925-2013), a pioneer of American Dance. Maria talks about her upbringing in Fairfax, Oklahoma, her Scotts-Irish/Osage culture and the awakening of music in her heart and it’s expression through dance. Her Native culture and ways, particularly dancing, was illegal where she grew up; but her people practiced them anyway. Her inspiring story shows the combination of hard work and dedication to her art that required her to be both strong enough to dance for hours and “delicate enough to break the human heart.”
