Calpurnia is a little girl who lives in a dark forest in Florida with her family and her dog Buggy-Horse. Her family is poor, and her father makes an honest living selling fish to other poor people. One day her father tells her hard times have come to the forest, that there are no more fish in the river and that things will go hard for them. Calpurnia wants to help! She sets out to see the fortune teller, Mother Albirtha, who tells her of a secret river where fish could be found. She sets out using her intuition and paying attention to all the signs of the forest to find the secret river to save her family from hard times. The illustrations by Caldecott medal winners Leo and Diane Dillon are awe inspiring, and the story is a long, rich one by the legendary Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, author of The Yearling. Great for reading aloud in chapters, for young and old alike!
